A hammer toe is a deformity of the second, third or fourth toes. In this condition, the toe is bent at the middle joint, so that it resembles a hammer. Initially, hammer toes are flexible and can be corrected with simple measures but, if left untreated, they may require surgery. People with hammer toe may have corns or calluses on the top of the middle joint of the toe or on the tip of the toe. They may also feel pain in their toes or feet and have difficulty finding comfortable shoes.

A hammer toe is an ugly and painful condition that occurs when the middle joint of the toe develops a bend that causes the toe to curl in a way that resembles a claw. The deformity develops over time and is usually caused by shoes that don't fit properly. Shoes that are too small, shoes that are too tight and shoes with a too-narrow box all cause a hammer toe. Because of the pressure that is caused by the poor-fitting shoes and the curled toes, hammer toe often leads to other foot conditions, like corns, calluses and bunions.

A mild case of hammer toe can be treated by changing shoes and wearing orthotic inserts. These will reposition the toe and reverse the condition. Severe cases of hammer toe, when the toe has become inflexible, can only be fixed through surgery that cuts the tendon and possibly removes bone.

The condition can be prevented by wearing properly fitting shoes. When purchasing shoes, be sure to have your feet measured professionally so that you can be assured that you have a good fit. Shoe inserts can also help to prevent a hammer toe. Avoiding shoes that are pointed in the toes and shoes with high heels will also help prevent hammer toe. New Balance shoes are wide throughout the box and are ideal for people who already suffer from a hammer toe, as they will relieve the pain and pressure. They have cushiony insoles that gently cradle your feet when you walk, making for a more comfortable over-all fit. Wearing New Balance shoes will help prevent hammertoe from ever forming.
