Less common that Pronation, it is just the opposite. When weight bearing, an outward rotation of the hind foot (varus), a lifting of the midfoot (inversion) and an inward swing of the forefoot (adduction). All characteristics associated more with pes cavus (high arched) foot.

Shoe Recommendations
To allow the foot to pronate naturally as much as possible, look at these styles. Remember its not about preventing the foot from rolling out, but allowing the foot to roll in.

Supination is part of the normal gait cycle. It occurs when the heel leaves the ground and the forefoot and toes propel the body forward. In a normal gait pattern, it is followed by pronation, which is when the foot rolls inward and the weight is shifted backward toward the heel again. Over-supination, commonly referred to simply as “supination,” is a rare condition in which the outward roll of the foot is prolonged or exaggerated. The brunt of the body’s weight is placed on the outer edge of the foot, which prevents the foot from absorbing shock properly. It is frequently seen in people with very high arches and can lead to a number of problems including plantar fasciitis, ankle sprains and ligament rupture. Chronic pain through the soles of the foot, as well as the joints and tendons of the knees, hips, back and neck are also common with this condition.

Proper stretching before workouts and proper footwear, such as the New Balance shoes, can help alleviate some of the problems associated with supination. Extra stretching of the calves, hamstrings, and quads will help reduce the strain to those muscles and loosen overly tight Achilles tendons that also contribute to the problem.

The best shoes for supination should be lightweight and flexible such as the New Balance 1080 for running or New Balance also offers the New Balance 927 for walking. Avoid shoes that are rigid through the middle and shoes that provide too much stabilization. Also, avoid shoes with a high arch as they may exacerbate the tendency of the foot to roll outward too much during the gait cycle. New Balance has a full range of shoes to help most gait problems.
